Dinraal is one of the three dragons returning in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (with a newcomer dragon appearing as well) alongside Farosh and Naydra. And, like the three goddesses of Zelda legend (Din, Farore, Nayru) that they seemed to be named after, each dragon encompasses a single element. Dinraal is the dragon of fire, as should be obvious from its appearance and the fact that it launches fireballs at Link when he gets close (though it's not 'technically' an enemy).

Princess Daisy is playable in these amazing Mario games.
As was the case in Breath of the Wild, players can farm all sorts of fantastic materials from these dragons, with the result depending on a few certain factors. So, let's go over where to get Dinraal's Scale specifically in Tears of the Kingdom, as well as what route Dinraal takes in the sky, the best locations to approach it from, and some other general tips so players who are taking their time with Tears of the Kingdom can go about gathering Dinraal materials in the most efficient way.
Updated October 13th, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: Regardless of where players are in their Tears of the Kingdom run, whether it's very early on or past the post-game, seeing those dragons slowly flying through the air is always such a cool sight. In Tears of the Kingdom, there are four dragons that constantly patrol the skies of Hyrule, and anyone familiar with the previous game, Breath of the Wild, will easily recognize three of them. And again, like in Breath of the Wild, it's worth hunting these dragons down (but not killing them, obviously) as the materials that they can drop are incredibly valuable. Dinraal, in particular, has parts that have a lot of utility and are also needed for some of the most popular armor upgrades, so let's go over where this dragon is in-depth.
Material Specifications Of Dinraal's Scale
First off, let's take a look at Dinraal's Scale's merit as a Material and why players would even want it. To start, the Scale has a Fuse Attack Power of 16. To give a bit of context as to what that means, a Blue Lizalfos Horn also has a Fuse Attack Power of 16, so it's great but not 'amazing' like say a Black Lizalfos Horn Weapon Fusion is at 26 Attack Power. Out of all the Dinraal parts, the Scales and Spike Shards have the weakest Fuse Attack Power.
Icon | Location | Material | Type | Elemental Attribute | Dye Color | Value | # Needed For Armor Upgrades |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Horns | Dinraal's Horn | Material | Fire | Crimson | 26 Fuse Attack Power, 300 Rupees | 1x (Fierce Diety Mask), 2x (Tunic of Memories), & 2x (Trousers of the Wild) | |
Lower Jaw | Shard of Dinraal's Fang | Material | Fire | Crimson | 20 Fuse Attack Power, 250 Rupees | 1x (Fierce Diety Mask) & 2x (Trousers of the Wild) | |
Legs & Talons | Dinraal's Claw | Material | Fire | Crimson | 18 Fuse Attack Power, 180 Rupees | 1x (Fierce Diety Mask) & 2x (Trousers of the Wild) | |
Body | Dinraal's Scale | Material | Fire | Crimson | 16 Fuse Attack Power, 150 Rupees | 1x (Fierce Diety Mask) & 2x (Trousers of the Wild) | |
Back Spikes | Shard of Dinraal's Spike | Material | Fire | Crimson | 16 Fuse Attack Power, 30 Rupees | 15x (Trousers of the Wild) |
Next, let's talk about its use in making loads of Rupees. A single Scale of Dinraal sells for about 150 Rupees at any NPC Merchant, which is equal to the sale price of a single Sapphire. Additionally, it needs to be mentioned that, when fused to a weapon, Dinraal's Scale adds fire properties to any attack from the said weapon. And let's not even get started on its usage in cooking which (usually isn't worth it) adds about 90 seconds to any effect the recipe would have already created.
Where To Get Dinraal's Scale
Now, as one would assume, to get Dinraal's Scale, players will need to find Dinraal. Each dragon in Tears of the Kingdom follows a 'flight path' of sorts (which is both incredibly immersive and a bit tedious) where they circle around a specific area of the map before heading into a Depths Chasm and popping back out sometime later on from another Depths Chasm somewhere else.
However, unlike Breath of the Wild, dragons in TotK aren't always in the same spot in their pattern at the same time of day. The dragons never despawn, and they're always following their set path, but the path isn't perfectly 'synced' with the 24-hour clock in-game, so Dinraal at 9 am one day will be in an entirely different place at 9 am the next day.
In any case, Dinraal flies between the Eldin Mountains and Akkala Regions near the top right of the map and will fly very close to specific areas/landmarks such as:
- The East Akkala Stable.
- The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab.
- The Right Eye of Skull Lake.
- Gut Check Rock.
- And the Thyplo Ruins Skyview Tower.
After passing these areas, Dinraal will fly back underground using the Drenan Highlands Chasm before popping back out of the East Akkala Plains Chasm. Players can actually follow Dinraal down or encounter it in the Depths too, but this is a lot more dangerous and difficult to work with in general.
How To Get Dinraal's Scale From Dinraal
Once players find Dinraal and know that they'll be able to get close to it by using a Skyview Tower, some Autobuild vehicle, or even some nearby tall landmark, they'll need to know what to actually do to get a Scale from this fiery beast.
Well, again, anyone familiar with how this whole process worked in Breath of the Wild will be happy to know it's basically the same as before. Essentially, depending on where the player hits Dinraal with an arrow (not in a boss fight sort of way, more like knocking a rock loose), a different part will drop off of it. After dropping off, the item will glow brightly and then fall all the way to the ground while maintaining this easily visible glow, where it can be picked up upon landing (or in the air if players manage to chase it down).
Precision is key for picking which Material to get off of Dinraal, so this is a pretty apt moment to use Zonai Wings, Keese Wings, or any other Arrow Fusion to make sure the arrow 'flies true'.
Alternatively, if players actually land on Dinraal (and heal through the fire damage or have Flame Guard active) they can grab the Material right as they 'dislodge it' before it falls. So, here's where they'll need to hit for each part
Material Name | Location To Hit | 'Where' To Hit |
---|---|---|
Dinraal's Scale | Body | Drops when Dinraal is hit anywhere that isn't one of the locations specified below. Best to aim for the long body of Dinraal below the Spikes on its back. |
Dinraal's Horn | Head Horn | The attack/arrow specifically needs to hit either of Dinraal's Horns. These Horns will glow brightly if a Material is available to be grabbed and it will be very easy to see. |
Dinraal's Claw | Claws/Feet | Hitting any of Dinraal's Talons, Claws, or Feet. Doesn't have to specifically be the 'nail' of the foot, any part of the leg/talon works. |
Shard of Dinraal's Spike | Spikes On Back | Physically looted (not shot off) from around the Back Spikes on Dinraal, seemingly randomly placed within the grooves connecting the spike to Dinraal's back. Also one of the only Materials players can get a ton of at once without having to wait ten minutes for it to respawn. |
Shard of Dinraal's Fang | Mouth | The most 'precise' location, needs to be hit in the lower jaw. Hitting on the nose or 'snout' will only result in getting a Scale. |
Best Locations, Strategies, & General Tips For Dinraal Farming
Finally, let's go over some personal recommendations for what locations work best to approach Dinraal and some other general tips. It's not like farming the materials off of the dragons in Tears of the Kingdom is all that difficult anyway, especially with how long the game has been out, but having more information is always better.
Plus, it's nice to experience the discovery and 'freedom' of seeing a dragon, reaching it, and figuring out how it works the first time. But once players need to farm multiples of these materials for upgrades and so on, that's when efficiency starts to matter a lot more
Best Approach Locations
In terms of locations, the best overall spots to hop onto (or fly onto) Dinraal is:
Location | Explanation |
---|---|
East Akkala Stables | Use the cliffside that is found near the road leading from East Akkala Stable to Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. |
Typhlo Ruins Skyview Tower | Launch from Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower when Dinraal is flying nearby or heading into the Highlands Depths Chasm. |
East Akkala Plains Chasm | Wait near the East Akkala Plains Chasm and use a bomb shield jump or Rocket Fused shield to glide over to Dinraal as it slowly ascends from the Chasm. |
Sky Island Above Skull Island Cave | From the sky island high above the Skull Lake's right eye where the Flux Construct III arena is. Also, worth putting a Travel Medallion up here if the player has any available. |
And, unlike in Breath of the Wild, players can actually land on the dragons this time around and then use melee weapons to knock parts off of them, making farming much easier.
Other General Tips
Another aspect to keep in mind is that the game only allows one Material to be grabbed from Dinraal per 10 in-game hours (not including the Shards of Dinraal's Spikes). Don't worry though, an hour in-game translates to a minute in real-time, so that's only a 10-minute wait.
And, players don't even need to get off of Dinraal while waiting, they can just keep cozy in between its horns for 10 minutes while it flies around, waiting for it to start glowing again (The horns are the most obvious tell for the glow). Lastly, let's go over just a few other general tips for players farming Dinraal:
Tip | Explanation |
---|---|
Use Fire-Proof Gear | Use the Flamebreaker Set bought from Goron City to have Flame Guard active which will make it bearable to actually stand on Dinraal. Additionally, just like in other areas where the Flamebreaker Set is needed, make sure not to pull out any items that could 'explode' while on Dinraal's back. |
Build & Save The Right Autobuild Craft | Once players build a craft that actually works for getting up to Dinraal, save it to the favorites section in the Autobuild menu so it can be used for the other dragons as well or when players need to come back and farm more materials off of this dragon. |
Don't Worry Too Much About Falling Off | There's a constant updraft wind that surrounds all of the dragons in TotK. This means players who fall off will be able to glide back up again if they're quick enough, and the game is very generous with Stamina-usage around dragons too. |
Dinraal Takes Awhile To Complete A Circuit | Dinraal takes around 2 in-game days to complete its flight path, both on the surface and in the Depths, and it spends about a day in each, which is why sometimes it can feel like Dinraal is mysteriously absent from the overworld. |
There's No Method To Quick-Progress Dinraal's Flight Path | Sitting at campfires, sleeping in a bed, or anything else that passes in-game time will not progress the dragon's flight path in that time jump. Blood Moons, for example, don't reset dragon positions either, even though they did in Breath of the Wild. |
