We used the pre-made mashed potatoes you find in the refrigerated aisle and it came out great! I think next time I'll add in some peas and finish it under the broiler so the cheese on the top browns a little more. We'll definitely make it again. This would work well with pretty much any leftover meat you have in your house.

My husband is a Brit and he LOVED this pie. Said it lacked NOTHING. The only thing I did differently was to put it into a prebaked pie shell. CHEERS!

I didn't have any left over mash, cause let's face it, they don't last that long in this house! The added time for the mashed potatoes made it about 20 min longer in prep. Let me tell you though, this recipe is WORTH IT. A lightened up version of one of my favorite comfort foods and it is not lacking in flavor. I didn't have any white cheddar, only yellow, so my potatoes didn't look as pretty as the picture. I think if I were to make this on the weekend and wanted to be a little naughty, I would replace half of the beef broth with red wine, just to amp up the flavor. Definitely worth the time and effort and will most definitely be making again.

I have been making this recipe for years and it's one of my all time favorites. I started substituting ground lamb for the ground beef and it gives the dish a much richer more traditional English flavor. If I don't have leftover mashed potatoes, I use the Bob Evans refrigerated ones and they are delicious.

While I didn't actually try this recipe, I did notice that it uses 'ground beef'. I'm an old Brit and we always used left over roast beef from Sunday's dinner and ground it up in a hand grinder (we didn't have a KitchenAid mixer back then). We also used peas and carrots (also left over) and mashed potatoes with some sprinkled cheese on top, finished in the broiler.

Was looking for comfort food on a wintry December. And needed a dish an 89 year old with dental issues could eat. This casserole fits the bill. I did make minor changes including adding Worcestershire sauce, increasing the carrots and onions and adding chopped celery and peas. Served for my guy and I with cole slaw for crunch. Won't look any further for a shepherd's pie type casserole, for sure.

My boss is French and I just learned that this dish was actually invented in France to introduce potatoes to the population (Hachis Parmentier), although I'm aware the French like to claim *all* good things. :) Anyway, I wasn't that impressed with how this came out, so I asked her to give me her review of this dish. (First, just to note that I added corn and peas, as was mentioned by other reviewers.) She also gave it three stars. Her major comments were: (1) the peas and corn were weird in there because they added a sweet taste (and why are we Americans so obsessed with sugar anyway?); (2) there weren't enough spices - she suggested oregano, a bay leaf, basic Italian seasonings in higher quantity; (3) the cheese was tasteless (why do you Americans torture something as perfect as cheese by making it "low-fat" and plastic-like?). I think I'll try her recommendations and see if this doesn't come out better.

I made this for a British style murder mystery that I was hosting. It was a huge hit. Plus it makes great leftovers. The mashed potatoes soak up all the juice and taste so wonderful. I have made it several times since just so I can have great leftovers to take to work for lunch. P.S. I am not a mushroom fan so I left those out.

This was a very tastey, kid friendly meal. I didn't give it 5 stars because I had to add more ingredients to kick up the flavor but other than that this dish is a keeper.

This was an excellent shepherd's pie. The beef mixture did seem to be missing something, so I added a drained can of diced tomatoes, and that did the trick. I might add additional veggies in the future. But overall, it was very flavorful. Broiling the cheese on top was a delicious idea.

We enjoyed this, as well as our friends. Since I had a thawed chuck roast, I braised that along with some onions and garlic and used that instead of the ground beef. I also put all of the cheese on top of the potatoes an broiled for a nice crust. The potatoes seemed to melt into the beef and veggie mixture and didn't stay separate like the picture showed. I also added peas along with the other vegetables. My friend wants the recipe. I would make again.

This recipe was super easy to make (even if you don't have leftover mashed potatoes - they can cook while you're prepping the meat mixture) and yummy! My husband loved it too. It even got better with age and the leftovers were even more flavorful. Loved the addition of the white cheddar cheese in the potatoes!

Very hearty, delicious meal that's easy to put together. I prepared as written except used sharp cheddar (not white) and dried herbs. Even our daughter who doesn't love mushrooms really liked this. It had a beefy, earthy flavor that was a nice change from some "shepherd's pie" recipes that use frozen mixed veggies. I did serve buttered peas on the side for some green. Will definitely make again.

Good recipe. I used ground chicken instead of beef and I had to add a little more beef broth but other than that I followed the recipe to a "T". I'm Irish so I'm used to the traditional "shephards pie" recipes but this was nice for a shake up. Would feed 4 or 6 easily as it is very filling.

I added frozen peas, also. I used shredded turkey breast. I had a lot so used a full can of beef broth. I think I will add all of the cheese to the top vs. mixing half in the potatoes for a better crust. Very good and relatively simple to make.

This was a fantastic weeknight meal. I added a little worcestershire to the broth to "beef" it up some more and omitted the cheese due to dairy allergy. This was perfect comfort food for a chilly autumn night. GREAT way to use extra mashed potatoes. Will add peas next time.
